Appendix Has Been Stolen.

February 28th, 2008 Brett Reilly Comments off

On Sunday morning just after getting home from work I had an incredible pain in my abdomen, so I thought I would get some sleep as it felt a bit like gastro was coming on, I laid in bed, not twenty minutes later my head was in the toilet bowl. Then my whole body just went into slow motion, I thought this day was going to suck.

As I tried to get some sleep the pain wasn’t going away, after the head was in the toilet one two many times I think it it was six or seven not sure exactly, I needed to get to hospital and I wasn’t going to pay for an ambulance, so I finally found someone to help, my sisters partner.

Well I got to the hospital, after hearing all the bad things about hospitals in the media, I was being treated within 5 minutes from the time I walked through the door and the Doctors and nurses all were very caring and helpful to try and ease the pain, gotta love that morphine, They ask me all the questions and I was off with the fairies, sound asleep, waking up occasional to do the routine checks. (And Family Visitors)

The first time they told me that I may have appendicitis I just ok, as you do when your drugged up and half asleep, the next morning they said we should be able to get you in to theater tonight, they came back in the afternoon and told me it wouldn’t be till tomorrow at 2 pm and I was just going out of my mind with the I.V in my hand unable to move and laying on my side was nearly impossible, so my bum was getting sore.

Well I was taken to theater, just before the anesthetist knocked me out he aid I may feel slight discomfort, as soon as I closed my eyes I was gone, waking up for a second someone said “hi Brett” next thing I remember is about 4 or five others next to me and I was being moved back to my room.

Well that was the easy part, now for the recovery..

My appendix was removed and they told me it was full of gunk, is gunk a technical term? and infected, then 36 hours of the I.V pumping antibiotics and saline solution into me that could not go quick enough.

Now back at home at least I can now find things to do and move around a bit though I feel a bit exhausted after just walking to the kitchen (after struggling to get up with minimal pain) just to get a drink or a snack, I also can’t yet eat all the good foods like macca’s, pizza, KFC, or even a good steak.

Thanks to all the staff at Ballarat Base Hospital.
